WINEYARD
Lagar de Codegua “Fundo La Esperanza” is located in the Cachapoal Valley
at the foothills of the Andes at 600 m.s.n.m (2,00 Feet above sea level).
SOIL: Alluvial and Coluvial. Formed by the washed down from the Andes Mountain to the bottom, as a result of the glaciation almost 12.000 years ago, and also formed by the material transported and deposited by water. It is extremely gravelly, well drained and deep, restricting plant vigor and yields in a natural way.
CURRENT PRESS: La Cav 92 points, Guía Descorchados 92 points
HIGHLIGHTS: CODEGUA wine line seeks to offer the potential and quality of less traditional varieties grown in our vineyard. This is a unique Tannat from Chile.
MORE INFO: Tannat is a variety that has powerful tannins, that is why we harvest early to explore the fresh and fruity side of the variety, since the tannins will be present in any way, the grapes are harvested by hand, in “gamelas” of 20 kg, very early in the morning under low temperature. A manual selection is done before the grape is passed through the destemmer. Fermentation is done in Bins of 800 kilos where the grapes reach around 12 degrees celcius, kept like this for about 2 days, until the temperature starts to rise with the start of spontaneous fermentation which is maintained between the 24ºC, and it extends for a period no longer than 15 days as to avoid extra tannins. Looking for a gently extraction of tannins, the chapeau is wet by hand with a jar. Once fermentation is finished, the wine is kept in French barrels of 225 liters of 3rd and 4th use for 14 months, carrying out the malolactic fermentation which begins when the temperature rises in spring. The wine stabilizes naturally and only a slight filtering is done before bottling.
WINEMARKERS NOTE
The Tannat is a little explored variety, becoming a challenge for us. Our Codegua Tannat has an explosive concentrated and fresh red fruit, iodine touches and with a pleasant acidity that enters vertically in the mouth and a powerful structure typical of a Tannat.
DRINK WHIT
With a powerful structure, this Tannat harmonizes well with meats of the most fatty type, such as Wagyu meat and Veined Loin. Because of its tannins, this kind of wine is good with a more fat or spicy food, it can be a platter of beef, pork ribs, or lamb.
